A brief look back at this International Historic Hillclimb of Ballon d’Alsace, the 8th edition already, for which the Historally team had set themselves the guiding principle: why change a winning formula?

It was therefore unsurprising that the town of Belfort played host to the event on 16 and 17 August last on the magnificent Place de l’Arsenal at the foot of the famous Lion in the town centre.

Around 160 crews were registered, who completed the administrative and technical checks on Friday afternoon and Saturday, much to the delight of the spectators.

The public was out in force over these two days, with well over 10,000 people filling the competitor area continuously, like at a fairground. The riders, always approachable, played along, answering numerous questions and requests for photos.

A lovely atmosphere for sharing a passion, evident in the smiling faces under the beautiful sun.

Saturday in the late afternoon, after a precise and rapid briefing, departure for the long-awaited parade, a 4 km journey through the streets of Belfort to finish in the historic centre. The drivers were asking for more, as were the spectators. It was not uncommon to see them packed three or four rows deep, applauding the cars.

Sunday brings a change of location and a change of climate.

The start at Lepuix and the entire climb were accompanied by persistent rain and large clouds. The fog reminded us that we were indeed in the Vosges mountains; visibility was greatly reduced above 1000m.

What about the road surface, which was made very slippery, it was quite a challenge, much to the delight of some, particularly the Belgian crews, who are used to this type of grip and were really enjoying themselves.

Nevertheless, four climbs took place, allowing the most perceptive drivers to cover a little over 50 km on closed roads, a score for historic hill climbs.

In terms of structures, the new pop-up campsite at the back of the football pitch, thanks to the friendly cooperation of the Giro-Lepuix Football Club, was unanimously approved. A level stabilized surface, wide pathways, and a precise layout welcomed around 80 teams equipped with marquees, motorhomes, and so on. The others who had only come with a trailer were able to park it in the large neighbouring meadow.

Nevertheless, a year without improvement doesn't exist at Historally, the VIP area had found its place just at the starting line. Two large marquees, a refreshment stand, the meal served on-site, and the show within sight; a real pleasure that all guests appreciated.
