Welcome to the Ballon d'Alsace, one of the major venues of French and International motorsport - and one of the longest hillclimbs in Europe.

9kms long, starting in the heart of St.Maurice-sur-Moselle with a series of steep hairpin bends which open onto a faster-flowing section, followed by more hairpins in the forest, finally a sprint to the finish at the summit with its panoramic views across the Vosgien countryside - a delight to drive.

While everyone agreed the 2017 organisation was first-class, the spirit of competition motivates the Historally team to do even better in 2018, so among several new features we shall have great pleasure in presenting a category for Classic Motorbikes, both Solo and Sidecars-For your pleasure and entertainmant, as ever!

Among several clubs present, sixteen members the newly-formed ARTS70 made the journey from the Saone Valley in a convoy of six cars to support their two regular competition members, Philippe Llinares in a BMW 320CSI, and Michel Pissard with his Matra Murena.

Return to BUSSANG for the Montée Historic International du Ballon d'Alsace (MHIBA)

In coming back to the town of Bussang, the participants in the MHIBA revived yet another bit of history. During the first hillclimb competion, which this demonstration event commemorates, Bussang had hosted on Saturday 4th August, the eve of the event, the Scrutineering and Banquet for the drivers.

This year saw another civic welcome to the town, not this time by M.POTTECHER ,the Mayor in 1906, but by the latest of his successors M.ALAIN VINEL. The teams were received in the attractive wooden Market Hall, where local artisans and producers had organised a mimi-market of local produce to accompany the aperitifs which were appreciated by everyone.

It was impossible not to notice the line-up of fabulous machines in front of the Town Hall(driven on the main road with the co-operation of the local Gendarmerie) and it seemed that all that was missing from this time-warp back 111 years were the flags and illuminations.

For the main part of the festivities, the banquet had been moved from the Two Keys Hotel, held in the old days by M.Wittenberger, across to the magnificent new main hall of the Casino de Bussang, made available by the Directrice Mme.GAËLLE VEILLET, thus cementing the partnership between MHIBA and the group VIKING CASINO.

During the evening M.VINEL awarded 6 medallions of the Town of Bussang to outstanding personalities from the world of motorsport.

Heartfelt applause echoed round the packed hall when organiser Jean-Pierre Münsch and speaker Denis Pechin welcomed onto the stage CHRISTINE BECKERS, world-renowned Belgian champion, CLAUDE DORMOY, Founding President of the ASA of Luronne and very quick at the wheel of his Simca 1000; the no-less celebrated pair GEROMOISE PIERRE MENY & JEAN-FRANCOIS LIENERE who had carried off some of the biggest national and international trophies in Alpine A110 and A310; PHILIPPE RENAULT, LeMans24H driver,European Touring Car champion, founder of ASAVE for Touring and GT cars, co-organiser and founder of the first Targa Florio Revival ,and with president B.Constant the Tour Auto of France; and finally ERIC POIROT in memory of Christian Poirot the great driver from Epinal,Porsche Distributor and winner in 1967 of the Sprint up the Ballon in a Porsche 904 which Eric was to drive in this revival event.

Success confirmed for the 2nd Edition

Success for the 2nd Montée Historique International de Ballon d'Alsace.

After the extraordinaire first edition, the challenge for the organisers was to confirm it-which they have done in no mean fashion.

The list of entries is convincing : some 200 cars including a superb array of pre-war racing cars, a magnificent trio of Porsche 904-906-910,several rarities such as the unique Lenkin Belgian F1, all the ingredients were there.


The pessimistic weather forecast undoubtedly discouraged some of the public,especially those who might have attended for the whole weekend,but in the end the sun poked through the clouds and we didn't see a drop of rain on Saturday and Sunday.

60 foreign entrants justified the International title and this mythical course of exceptional length -90 kilometers - has distinguished itself as a Grand Epreuve well beyond the boundaries of France.

History was relived on the slopes of the Ballon d'Alsace with the return of the Porsche 904 GTS,driven to victory in 1967 by Christian Poirot and piloted in 2017 by his son Eric who has restored it - one of several memorable stories to come out of the weekend.

Among many encounters with outstanding personalities and exceptional drivers, which ones stand out in the memory? Certainly Christine Beckers, the only professional female driver to brave the "lion's den" of NASCAR oval racing at Daytona, as well as being a regular and very successful co-driver in the LeMans 24H (remember the all-female team in the 2-litre Chevron?) whose day was made when she got Réné Arnoux to autograph her helmet. - and one could not overlook the ever-discrete and charming Philippe Renault, multiple European Champion in Group3 Touring cars, LeMans 24H driver, winner of the European Cup for Historic Racers in his Lister-Jaguar,founder of the ALSAVE for historic Touring and GT cars,co-organiser with Bernard Constant of the Tour de France Auto, and founder of the first Targa Florio Historic....

Drivers and spectators alike were more than satisfied, and the date date for the next rendezvous has been set: 10th-11th-12th of August 2018.
